Choose between a washed finish and a planed finish;
The washed finish is best for showing the worn "skin" of th piece of wood, be it the edge of shelving, the panels or frame of a wardrobe, or a table top. I will make sure that there are no splinters and sharp bits left. You will be able to feel the time - worn surface. I will seal and stabilise the piece with a water based varnish
The planed finish is best for showing the grain that has grown inside the tree. The colour will usually be lighter and the surface will feel smooth. I will seal and stabilise the piece with either a water based varnish or a natural oil and wax finish.
I use a variety of finishes on the planed or washed surfaces of the furniture - depending on the desired look and the purpose of the piece.
Water based varnish in matt, satin or gloss can be applied to planed as well as washed surfaces. Once you have commissioned work from me, I will show you samples to choose from, using the specific timber I will use for your project. Similar with oil and wax finishes, which are more suitable to planed surfaces.
